Prostate Cancer Tests

The prostate cancer is a common type of cancer, so common that in America only the lung cancer causes more deaths. The skin, the lung and the prostate cancer are listed on the first places on the list of frequent and highly dangerous types of cancer and every year, around the world, one in six men is diagnosed with a prostate cancer.
The prostate is the male specific gland located near the genitals and because it is responsible with the making of the semen any hormonal problems that may affect the normal biological functions of the organism will also directly affect the functions of the prostate organ.
For example, after the age of forty, the levels of testosterone in a male’s body will decrease so all men will experience the “male menopause” with different effects on the general health of that particular person. Some effects can lead to the enlargement of the prostate or to the development of prostate specific disorders and diseases such as prostatitis, cancer and the benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The prostate cancer causes may vary from one person to another and because of this the prognosis for the outcome is very difficult, even if the prostate cancer tests results have indicated the existence of an early stage tumor or an advanced tumor.
Another important fact about the cancer of prostate is that it has no early symptoms to make it noticeable before the actual spreading process.
The spreading of the malignant tumors is done through the bloodstream and lymph system and the cancer cells will travel, in the first stance, to near areas of the prostate, affecting the bladder, the liver, etc; in the last stages, the small, secondary tumors have already been formed in far distance regions of the primary infected organ so the cancer becomes locally advance and in its metastatic forms it affects gravely the vital organs such as the lungs and the brain.

The recommended screening tests for the prostate cancer should be done at regular periods of time because they make possible the early detection of cancer, even the results have to be interpreted by some medical specialists The doctors can also identify the existence of a benign tumor and only the malignant tumors are responsible for cancer.
Basically the screenings will show the levels of the prostate specific antigen after analyzing the blood samples taken for the blood tests and whether an abnormality is felt with the prostate gland or not, after directly palpating it with a gloved finger inserted into the rectum, an unpleasant examination procedure known as the DRE or the digital rectal exam.
For an accurate diagnose the prostate biopsy is a highly recommended test or method of detecting the prostate cancer; it is performed by physicians that will extract, with the help and guidance of the ultrasound images, several tissue samples from all the surrounding regions of the prostate gland but also from different parts of the prostate. New procedures such as the nomogram, the prostate mapping, the coaxial tomography or the radionuclide bone scans, complement the biopsy for establishing the exact characteristics of that type of cancer.
Each cancer is unique and that means that the same type of cancer will develop in different stages, in different patients, with different health consequences; even the treatment will prove ineffective if doctors don’t accurately determine the stage and grade of a cancer.
Even with a proper treatment the cancer can always recurs but with the help of those prostate cancer specific tests you can actually prevent this disease from appearing and if the early stage cancer is detected there is a high possibility of curing it. Actually there is a ninety percent chance surviving for at least five years after the initial diagnose and after fifteen years the survival rates will stabilize and that means that the chances for the cancer to be recurrent drop at a low level.
According to the results of the performed tests for the prostate cancer detection, the recommended treatment therapies will be the prostatectomy or the prostate surgery only if the cancer is still organ confined, after being complemented with the used of strong drugs to prevent its recurrence or the hormone therapy or the androgen therapy, chemotherapy and the radiation therapy with brachytherapy or the external proton beam radiation therapy.
