Alternative Treatments For Prostate Cancer

Published on Jun 25 2010, in the categories: Alternative treatments

The cancer of prostate is a frequent disease, affecting every year almost one man from six, all over the world. The incidence to develop a prostate cancer is greater in African-American men than Asian men, and the research studies have concluded that this has something to do with the alimentation but also because of race, genetic inheritance, the living and working environment and probably the most surprising one, the aging process.

The prostate gland is one important part in the male reproductive system and is located near the genitals, the urethra and the bladder. That means that any disorder that affects these organs will also directly affect the functions of the prostate; should be underlined the fact that the hormonal problems, generally caused by the aging process and the constant decreasing of the levels of testosterone, will gravely affect the general health of a person.

The spreading process is a slow one and sometimes the tumor will double its size once every four years but the correct treatment will stop or even delay that progression; once it is treated, the chances of survival will stabilize after fifteen years but until then, the possibility of cancer recurrence will remain. And not only the idea of recurrent cancer is troublesome but also the fact that the cancer might come back in more aggressive forms and since every cancer is unique, the treatment options, being either conventional or alternative, for the prostate cancer might not be enough to stop it of becoming metastatic.

Some of the symptoms related with the existence of cancer may not even be cause by the malignant tumors; the tumors are benign and malignant and only the latter is responsible for cancer so the prostate gland can be affected by other disorders and diseases such as the benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis. These conditions should be treated as soon as they are diagnosed because not only do they affect the daily activities if that person but the enlargement of the prostate can also evolve into forms of cancer.

A diagnose can be correctly put after the prostate biopsy procedure which remains the best method of detection; but for a biopsy to be done the routinely recommended screening test results have to indicate an abnormality in the prostate body area. The screenings are basically made off two medical examinations; the blood test samples are necessary to identify the levels of the prostate specific antigen in the body and the digital rectal exam is a direct method of sensing a hardness on the surface of the infected gland by palpating it, after inserting a glove finger into the rectum.

Because the surgery is a direct operation of the prostate gland it involves a series of potential life-threatening side-effect such as the local bleeding, temporary or permanent impotence and incontinence. In this kind of situation, the doctors often recommend the use of nutritional foods that may stop the bleeding and a nutritional diet that should be respected before and after the operation. This diet must include products with zinc, bioflavonoids and proteins and vitamin A, B-complex vitamin, C vitamin and after the prostatectomy, to add to your diet small doses of vitamin E and curcumin and bromelain. Some after-effects of the prostatectomy could be temporary or in the less fortunate cases, permanent, but this diet should be maintained no matter the situation.

At the borderline between the conventional and alternative treatment options for the prostate cancer stands the expectant management procedure. The watchful waiting basically means the non-intervention in stopping the evolution of cancer by using a treatment; instead the medical specialists will supervise this progression and prescribe only a nutritional diet to prolong as much as possible the life of that patient.

The prognosis for the cancer outcome is a difficult one because, by definition, cancer is not a fully understandable medical condition and each type of cancer, in fact, the characteristics of each malignant tumor are different from the rest, depending mostly on the characteristics of each patient’s body. There two treatment methods, the conventional treatment is practiced only by the medical specialists and surgeons while the alternative treatment for the prostate cancer includes therapies such as homeopathy, hydrotherapy and the most popular one, the herbal therapy.
