Common Prostate Cancer Symptoms

Published on Apr 19 2010, in the categories: Signs of disease

The prostate cancer is a common and frightening disease probably because it is treatable but not curable: that basically means that there is always a possibility of cancer recurrence and that the treatments prescribed by doctors can only alleviate the pains you may feel and sometimes increase the life span.

There are certain diseases or disorder that may affect the prostate like prostatitis or the benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH but are not related to cancer. The problem appears once the tumor is malignant because the cancerous cells will start to divide and spread rapidly, so the original or the primary tumor will form secondary tumors in the invaded organs.

These cells will travel to remote parts of the body, through the bloodstream or the lymph vessels; this is the main reason why doctors need to detect early if the tumor is organ confined, advanced only in the surrounding areas of gland or metastatic, once it has invaded the whole body. In the absence of symptoms that can indicate the spreading of the cancer, the early detection is possible only with the help of the screening tests, prostate specific antigen blood tests and digital rectal exams, or the prostate biopsy. Usually this last procedure will give a better result for a better diagnose. The staging process is necessary to prescribe the right treatment for the prostate cancer. As I’ve stated before, it is most unfortunate the fact that the prostate cancer has to early symptoms but once they tend to appear, each patient will feel different pains. These pains usually indicate that the tumor is spreading, slowly and sometimes can double its size once every four years, but research studies have concluded that there are some common symptoms that all patients with prostate cancer will report: weak or frequent urine stream, burning while urinating, painful ejaculation, pain while urinating, back pains, stiffness, blood in urine or semen, ache or abdomen and bone pain, compression of the spine, leg weakness or incontinence. In its metastatic form, the cancer will affect the pelvis, the liver, the vertebrae, the lungs and the ribs and will eventually lead to a painful death if it is left untreated.

When the lungs are affected, cough, respiratory problems and chest pains are the common symptoms; a weak liver could cause abdomen pains and give a yellow color to the skin, an affected spinal cord will result in muscle weakness, incontinence and compression of the spine. Metastatic cancer will invade the lymph system and cause leg pains because prostate cancer has the predilection of affecting the bone structures. The muscle weakness is often associated with symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, lack of muscle strength or malaise. Some will notice these symptoms sooner and some later, when the cancer is already in its advanced form, but as soon a you start to feel uncomfortable and feel pains and you can’t explain their cause, contact immediately your personal doctor and explain in detail what bothers your. It would be better to prevent this disease and start relying on what does your doctor recommend for maintaining a good health. Of course, there is no need to tell you that you have to give up on bad habits like excessive smoking, drinking or foods with a great amount of animal fats.
