The Average Age Of Men With Prostate Cancer
Published on Feb 26 2010, in the categories: Related topics, Stages of disease, Useful Info
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. If a woman finds a breast lump she will immediately think she has breast cancer, and a man who begins to urinate more often at night and has blood in their urine will immediately think they have prostate cancer.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of prostate cancer is not known yet, but there have been identified many risk factors, like factors that increase the chance of having this disease. Fortunately, quite a lot of these risk factors, such as what we eat, can help us prevent this disease. This means that is in our power to prevent prostate cancer!
The average age of men with prostate cancer has been established by scientists who are analyzing and experimenting all the factors and patients with prostate cancer. They came to the conclusion that the average age of men with prostate cancer is 50 years old. This is why, starting with the age of 40, all men should go once a year to have a medical examination in order to determine if they have this disease.
Here is a list of advice on what to do in order to prevent prostate cancer:
- Reduce consumption of meat and other foods high in animal fat (it has beneficial effects on heart health).
- Use moderately any fat, including vegetable (not olive oil seems to increase risk of prostate cancer).
- Eat more fruits and vegetables, especially cabbage family vegetables, and more tomatoes and tomato juice.
- Use milk and milk products with caution. If you are open minded, try soy milk.
- Avoid over-eating and overweight.
- Think about it and discuss with your doctor about using a supplement with vitamin E.
- Eat whole grains regularly to ensure a satisfactory intake of selenium.
- Make sure you have a satisfactory intake of vitamin D.
- Exercise regularly and avoid alcohol.
Do not neglect regular medical checks. Especially after 50 years old is recommended an annual medical examination (rectal examination, possibly ultrasound) and blood tests for prostate specific antigen (PSA) whose value generally increases more in the case of prostate cancer. This way, if you detect prostate cancer earlier you have better chances of survival.
British doctor Helen Rippon said that the role of stem cells in prostate cancer development was, for many years, the subject of intense speculation. Rippon also said that new stem cell does not depend on male hormones that control prostate growth to survive. This may be an indication of the causes of cancer which becomes immune to hormone treatments, applied in the final placements of the disease. Prostate cancer kills 254,000 men every year, everywhere in the world and is the second most widespread form of this cancer in males, after lung cancer.
Researchers have discovered a stem cell that could be responsible for onset of prostate cancers. In an article in Nature has been stated that although the new discovery has not yet passed the experimental stage, scientists believe that this could explain the occurrence of cancer of the prostate, resulting in the future new methods of treatment. Cancer is indeed a blow in one man’s life, but it is the cause of repeated mistakes which take place for years and years, until the body gives up. This is why the best treatment for prostate cancer is to prevent it!
