Treatments For Prostate Cancer

The only method of detecting the prostate cancer in its early stages is by doing the recommended screening tests at regular periods of time, especially after the age of forty when men are more exposed in developing prostate problems.
Cancer is defined as a abnormal condition that develops not only because of the factors mentioned before but also because the levels of the testosterone variant, dihydrotestosterone or DHT, will cause a growth in size of the prostate, and since almost ninety percent of the male body’s hormones are produced by the testicles, a part of the reproductive system located near the prostate organ area, any hormone health problem will directly affect the main functions of the gland responsible with the making and storing of the seminal fluid.

The main prostate cancer causes are the living environment, the genetic inheritance since we know that all types of cancer can be inherited from other family members, excessive smoking and alcohol drinking, the unbalanced diet, the aging process that may influence directly the levels of testosterone and even race.
There are two methods of doing the screening examination: by taking some blood samples and analyzing them and establishing the levels of the prostate specific antigen and the free testosterone in the body and by performing the rectal exam. This latter procedure is done by a physician who inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to palpate the prostate gland and detect any lumps or a hardness that can indicate the existence of an organ-confined tumor.
The screening results are to be interpreted by the medical specialists; the prostate biopsy is used only in the situations when the screenings indicate an abnormal result.
The prostate biopsy is am operation done with the guidance of the ultrasound images and involves taking some prostate tissue samples; if the cancer cells are detected, with the nomogram, the radionuclide bone scans, the coaxial tomography and the prostate mapping and last but not least, with the Whitmore-Jewett and TNM staging systems and the popular Gleason grade, the doctors will find out the main characteristics of that cancer and prescribe the right treatment for it.
The prognosis for the cancer outcome is so challenging that doctors always have to keep in mind that there are two important results, whatever the cancer treatments might be: the prescribed treatment will prove ineffective and they immediately have to recommend another form of treatment so that the cancer will not spread any further or the initial treatment therapy gives positive results while delaying or even stopping the cancer evolution.
The prostate cancer treatments will depend on the cancer’s characteristics mentioned above. As you will find out, all treatment therapies have their own set of side-effects, some potentially life-threatening.
The expectant management method or the watchful waiting stands at the borderline of the conventional and the alternative treatments and is described as the simple activity of monitoring the progression of the cancer without interfering; the alternative treatment is also known as the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Treatment and includes the herbal therapy and homeopathy.

The radiation therapy has the effect of damaging the DNA of a cell, sometimes affecting even the normal ones; this damage will prevent the multiplication and growth of the cancerous cells while the prostate surgery or prostatectomy is done by removing the malignant tumor from the prostate gland or just the infected prostate tissues; in some cases the removal of the prostate gland is necessary to stop the spreading process.
The hormone therapy is performed by using anti-androgenic drugs and the LH-RH agonists; these medications will block the effects of the testosterone on the prostate gland.
Cryotherapy or the cryoablation therapy is done with the guidance of the ultrasound images by freezing the prostate gland and with it, the potential cancerous cells while chemotherapy is a treatment therapy that needs the use of strong drugs such as the alkylating agents and topoisomerase inhibitors, alkylating agents and plant alkaloids, anthracyclines and antimetabolites
